Xvid is open-source software published under the GNU GPL license. The Xvid project releases just source code packages (for developers). Source code distribution has the advantage that it is platform-independent and is suitable for many different operating systems and hardware architectures. Making Xvid usable for a specific platform requires compiling the source codes for this platform and integrating the Xvid codec into a operating system dependent software framework. Xvid can be compiled for many platforms and luckily appropriate binary installer packages are maintained by third parties. A (very) incomplete list of links to binary installers for some popular platforms is provided below.
